Trailer Catch-Up 🎞: Mulan, Jumanji: The Next Level, Knives Out, and More!

In this week entry of Trailer Catch-Up, I discuss the latest trailers for Mulan, Jumanji: The Next Level, Knives Out, Spies in Disguise, and Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon!

It’s another week of discussing the latest trailers on Trailer Catch-Up. I can’t say I was surprised that there hasn’t been a ton of new trailers out this week with it being Independence Day and all. That being said, there were three that caught my attention that is sure to be big hits when they come out. With that, let’s talk about some last week’s trailers if we must.

‘Mulan’ (3/27/2020)

Now the first trailer to talk about arrived Sunday afternoon and it’s our first look at next year’s Disney live-action remake of Mulan, based on the popular 1998 animated classic. If you’re unfamiliar with the original, it’s about a young woman (Yifei Liu) who pretends to be a man to fight against Northen Invaders attacking China.

Besides The Lion King (which will be good), Mulan is the other Disney movie I could actually see getting the live-action treatment. And from the looks of this teaser, it’s clear that director Niki Caro (Whale Rider) is trying to portray a different take on the animated movie, which doesn’t bother me whatsoever. There some beautiful cinematography, production design, and the action look like it could make for an honest martial arts movie done by the studio. To be honest, this is a better teaser than Aladdin‘s.

Will this be another movie where a lot will complain about this being unnecessary? Does that happen with every remake Disney puts out? I won’t go no and say Mulan is one of my most anticipated movies of 2020, but I’m definitely interested in seeing it now. I also have a strong feeling Liu will be great as the Disney princess.

Score: 7/10

‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ (12/13)

Next up, Sony has released the official trailer for their big holiday sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, which sees the return of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian, and Jack Black as well as Danny Devito, Danny Glover, and Awkwafina. In this, we see the four teenagers sent back into the video game world of Jumanji, the only exception is that the game has some problems, including those who aren’t in the right characters.

I was surprised by how I enjoyed Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle when it came out. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a totally fun and adventurous sequel that’s better than the original. This new installment looks to be the same since it looks to be more entertaining and hilarious.

Seeing Johnson act like Devito and Hart act like Glover could be good if they don’t go overboard with that joke. I’m pretty stoked to see Jumanji: The Next Level near the end of the year.

Score: 7.5/10

‘Knives Out’ (11/29)

The next big trailer that came out on Tuesday is the official trailer for Knives Out, Rian Johnson’s modern mystery flick featuring an all-star cast that includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer, and many more. The film follows a family under investigation after a crime novelist is found dead and Craig’s Detective is on the case.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing footage from Knives Out for a while after hearing about it, and it didn’t disappoint. It provides some dark comedy that’s unexpected along with some memorable performances, especially from Chris Evans, who I think will steal this entire movie. Luckily enough, it doesn’t give anything away. Love me some Rian Johnson, too. Even though I’m in that large group of people who defends Star Wars: The Last Jedi against the haters, I’m glad he’s going back to smaller movies with an intriguing story.

Murder mysteries are sort of getting repetitive right now, but I have a feeling Johnson’s take will be fresh, unpredictable, and a nod to the genre. Knives Out is just another movie that I’m very much anticipating in November.

Score: 8/10

‘Spies in Disguise’ (12/25)

Next up, Fox and Blue Sky Studios released the second trailer for their newest animated movie Spies in Disguise, featuring the voices of Will Smith and Tom Holland. Smith voices superspy Lance Sterling, who gets turned into a pigeon by Holland’s scientist Walter.

Spies in Disguise still looks lame and doesn’t convince me this will be funny. Maybe it’s the pigeon part that ruins everything. This is basically just the first trailer, except we get to see how Lance turns into the pigeon. Hopefully, the movie turns out to be good from the studio, but nothing’s convincing me to give it a chance. I even think people kind of forgot that this was still coming out.

Score: 3/10

‘Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon’ (12/13)

The next trailer to talk about is the new UK trailer for Aardman’s stop-motion sequel Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon. We get to see the titular Shaun meets a cute, little alien and an adventure of returning him home.

I’m a huge fan of Aardman Animation, but I actually never saw the first Shaun the Sheep movie, but I surprisingly heard nothing but great things about it. I’m actually interested in checking it out because I laughed a few times in this trailer than I did from before. Just like before, this probably won’t have a lot of dialogue as it’s going to have plenty of slapstick comedy.

Score: 7/10
