Trailer Catch-Up🎞️: Frozen 2, Doctor Sleep, Trolls World Tour, and More!

Trailer Catch-Up returns as I review the trailers for Frozen 2, Doctor Sleep, Trolls World Tour, Ready or Not, Good Boys, The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Angry Birds Movie 2, and Bad Trip.

It is that time again for another installment of Trailer Catch-Up, the segment here on DC’s Take where I give a rundown of the latest trailers that have come out of the past week and give my first impressions of all of them.

Since there were only a few that dropped last week, there was no point of making a post about three. But now there’s a lot to review, especially from the animation side. Getting that out of the way, let’s get into two weeks worth of trailers, shall we?

‘Frozen 2’ (November 22)

Disney has released the second trailer for one of the most anticipated animated movies of the fall movie season Frozen 2 on the 11th. What this follow-up tells us is that Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven will be taking a journey to the North to find out how Elsa got her powers.

To be honest, I absolutely love the original Frozen, and I’ve been waiting for a long time for Disney to make a sequel. This new trailer made me had the exact same reaction to the teaser: Looks beautiful, but I need to know more of the plot. But I think it’s a good thing we don’t know much about it since there could be a surprise somewhere. All I know is that Frozen 2 will be visually stunning and some great music for us when it comes out.

But still, I can’t wait to see this.

Score: 7/10

‘Doctor Sleep’ (November 8)

The next big trailer to come out is for writer/director Mike Flanagan’s adaption of Doctor Sleep, Stephen King’s sequel to “The Shining” starring Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson. We get to see an adult Dan Torrance still trying to forget what happened at the Overlook Hotel and he meets a young girl who also has the gifted powers of “the shining”.

Doctor Sleep is easily one of my most anticipated movies for the rest of the year. And from the looks of it, this seems to be a continuation from Stanley Kubrick’s classic adaptation of the novel since it shows recreated footage of the classic and the use of the original score at the very end, which I’m cool on all accounts.

I fully trust this in the hands of Flanagan since he has well established himself in the horror genre, especially on Netflix with Gerald’s Game and The Haunting of Hill House. This trailer is creepy and beautifully eerie, and that’s all I need. Every other horror movie that’s coming out this year, besides It: Chapter 2, doesn’t matter anymore.

Score: 9/10

‘Trolls World Tour’ (April 17, 2020)

DreamWorks Animation released the first trailer to Trolls World Tour, the sequel to hit 2016 animated musical hit starring Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake reprising the voices of Queen Poppy and Branch once again. In this latest adventure, the titular trolls embark on a journey to save the six troll lands devoted to different genres of music, from funk, country, techno, classical, pop, and rock. When Queen Barb (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Rachel Bloom) want to destroy all the music, it’s up to them to stop her.

To my surprise, the first Trolls turned out to be a surprise from me since the trailers that were kind of bad, and it was pretty enjoyable. Not particularly sure how this will be since I wasn’t “wowed” with the trailer. What Trolls World Tour has going for it are colorful animation and covers of popular songs.

This doesn’t come out until next year, so I’m hoping something else from the marketing will convince me.

Score: 6/10

‘Ready or Not’ (August 23)

Fox Searchlight has released the first red band trailer for Ready or Not starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, and Andie MacDowell. And in this horror comedy, Weaving plays a young bride that’s on the fight for survival after her new husband’s eccentric family play a deadly, traditional game of hide-and-seek.

This trailer was bonkers in a good way. I was just expecting this to be a horror movie of some kind, and it looks like the offspring of You’re Next and Funny Games. Seeing this game being turned into a game of death is fun enough.

I was looking forward to this, until I saw who’s directing it: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. They are the directors of Devil’s Due, which I heard nothing but horrible things about. If taking that issue out the window, Ready or Not has the potential to be a surprise.

Score: 8/10

‘Good Boys’ (August 16)

Next Up is the green band trailer for Universal’s next comedy Good Boys starring Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon, and Keith L. Williams. This is more of an appropriate trailer (kinda) where it tells the story of three friends ditching school and going on a crazy day on their hands.

I actually saw this exact trailer two months ago when I saw Hellboy, and I still managed to get a lot of laughs from this just like the red band trailer. Not too raunchy like before, but I’m pretty excited about Good Boys after its debut at SXSW.

Score: 7/10

‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ (August 9)

Roadside Attractions has finally released the official trailer for The Peanut Butter Falcon starring Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson, and introducing Zachary Gottsagen. The story follows the tale of a Down syndrome boy named Zak (Gottsagen) who runs away from a residential nursing home to his dreams to become a professional wrestler and all will be done by the help with Tyler (LaBeouf) to make that dream happen.

Having no clue what The Peanut Butter Falcon was about just by the title, this actually looks excellent. Getting the feeling this will be a touching and hilarious buddy movie that’s said to be a modern take on Mark Twain, and that’s something that’s worth checking out. Shia LaBeouf looks to be in a role that suits him, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t like him.

Score: 8/10

‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ (August 16)

Up next is for the final trailer for Angry Birds Movie 2, which I don’t give a lick about. The fact that this sequel was made when the original wasn’t even that bad doesn’t surprise me, but this failed to make me laugh just like the previous trailers.

I just feel bad for all the talents lending their voices in this. Worse enough, the trailer screeches to a halt for about 20 seconds to have a breakdancing battle.

Score: 4/10

‘Bad Trip’ (October 25)

And finally, the last trailer to talk this week is the red band trailer for Bad Trip starring Eric Andre, Lil Rel Howery, and Tiffany Haddish. This hidden camera comedy is basically just the three actors pulling pranks in front of real people. That’s all.

Maybe it’s me, but I think we’re at the point where pranks in entertainment stopped being funny when Punk’d was on the air, except for Jackass. But Bad Trip just looks like a waste of time to sit through a comedy with jokes that won’t land. Would some of these people know who they are because of their appearances in movies or TV? Does nobody watch The Erie Andre Show?

Score: 2/10
